Go away, Donald

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

I continue to await the day when I no longer can wonder what in the world is going to fly out of Donald Trump’s mouth, what ends up on the news, what gets people yapping and yammering about this and/or that bit of nonsense.

Sadly, that day hasn’t yet arrived. The 45th POTUS keeps making news. Damn that dipsh**, anyway!

Some of the news isn’t of his making, at least not directly. We have those ongoing investigations that have turned into criminal probes of alleged illegal conduct. That’s newsworthy, right?

Then we have the other stuff, such as his declaring war against certain Republicans — politicians from his own political party (allegedly!) — who fail to do his bidding … as if it matters any longer what he says or does. I mean, the guy lost an election bigly against President Joe Biden.

And then — and how can we forget this — he continues to foment the Big Lie about how President Biden “stole” the election by taking advantage of “rampant vote fraud.”

There … was … no … vote … fraud!

That hasn’t stopped the butt wipes in Arizona from conducting that phony “audit” looking for miscounted ballots that would give the state’s electoral votes to Trump instead of where they already have been certified, in President Biden’s cache of votes.

I am sick and tired of Donald J. Trump. I want him off the grid. I want to concentrate on people in public life who really matter to me — and to the rest of the country that is trying to come back from the pandemic chaos that the ex-POTUS only worsened.

Make me happy … Donald

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

Donald John Trump said this today:

“I’m loving what I do and I’m loving the result that we’ve had and I think people will be very happy with my decision.”

The decision to which he refers is whether he runs for president in 2024.

I’ll concede that I will be happy only if he makes the correct decision.

That would include the following conclusions:

  • I cannot be nominated by a Republican Party that has been decimated by my backstabbing, Twitter-loving messages.
  • Prosecutors are going to indict me on allegations that I committed several crimes in at least two states.
  • I already have lost two presidential election popular votes and I have embarrassed myself by declaring that the 2020 election was stolen from me because of rampant voter fraud.
  • There was no rampant fraud.

Is he going to do any or all of that? Oh … probably not.

If he jumps into the 2024 campaign, which would surprise me to no end given the obstacles he must confront, then I won’t be “happy” with his decision.

If he stays out of the race, well, that would bring a smile to my face.

Trump: a national peril

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

I take no pleasure in asserting what I believe in my heart … that Donald J. Trump presents a dire and existential threat to the nation he once governed.

Of all the men who preceded him as president — and there have been some serious losers/wack jobs/crooks/criminals, none of them come as close to presenting the threat to our very governmental fabric that Donald Trump presents.

He continues to spew the Big Lie about the 2020 presidential election. His minions in the House of Representatives are about to boot the GOP caucus chair from her post because she stood on principle. He threatens anyone who crosses him. Trump has not a shred of decency to stop the assault on our electoral process that is underway in Arizona, where conspiracy theorists are concocting scenarios they hope will deny President Biden the votes he won legitimately.

Donald Trump is a threat to our national security. To our very governmental fabric. To the balance of political power.

Do I like saying these things about him? No. Of course not!

When the votes were counted in the 2020 election, Donald Trump could have picked up a phone and congratulated the winner, Joe Biden. He could have wished him well. He could have pledged his support. Trump could have declared his intention to oversee a smooth transition of power. He could have welcomed the president-elect and his wife to the White House, shown them around the place and then sat there at the inaugural and clapped politely when the new president took his hand off the Bible as he was sworn in.

No. Donald Trump didn’t do any of that. Indeed, he incited a riot by a terrorist mob on Jan. 6. He turned his back on Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the certification of the Electoral College victory that Biden rang up. Trump has turned his back on Pence, who did his constitutional duty and had to be holed up in a secure location while the terrorists were yelling “Hang Mike Pence!” as they stormed into the Capitol Building.

To think, therefore, that most Republican voters have swallowed that poison that Trump has dished out — believing that the election was “stolen” — is utterly beyond anything I ever could have imagined.

Donald Trump continues to threaten the nation. Anyone with a sense of shame would be, well, ashamed. This individual simply defies any norm of decency, dignity and decorum.

House GOP to define itself

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

The U.S. House of Representatives Republican caucus is facing a defining moment this week.

It will have a chance to define itself as being willing to push forward a serious agenda or whether it will serve as a cabal of toadies for a disgraced, defeated for president of the United States, the former Liar in Chief who continues to foment the Big Lie about the 2020 presidential election, that it was stolen from Donald Trump by “rampant vote fraud.” There was no rampant fraud. It’s a lie. It’s the Big Lie.

The moment will come in a vote over whether to replace Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as the Republican caucus chair and seat Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York in her place.

Cheney is a right-wing conservative lawmaker with serious GOP chops, being the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She also is a principled conservative who was as appalled and aghast as others were at the insurrection that Donald Trump — the aforementioned Liar in Chief — incited on Jan. 6. She voted to impeach Trump.

That doesn’t sit well with most of the GOP caucus. They fawn over Trump and are fearful of what he could do them if they were to cross him, the way Cheney did.

So up steps Stefanik, a Trumpster to the core. She has bought into the Big Lie. She is loyal to the Liar in Chief. And so … the House GOP caucus will get to choose her over Cheney, which they appear set to do on Wednesday.

It surely will mark a dismal moment in the history of a once-Grand Old Party.

There’s a glimmer of good news in this key vote. It well good pi** off enough serious Republicans to turn their back on the Big Lie … and on Donald J. Trump.

Big Lie: alive and festering

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

The Big Lie, the one fomented by Donald Trump, is alive and festering in Maricopa County, Ariz.

What gives? Well, a group of conspiracy theorists is ramrodding a supposed “recount” of votes cast during the 2020 presidential election. The Arizona vote ended up narrowly in President Biden’s total, giving him the state’s electoral votes.

The conspiracy nuts are looking for justification to turn the results over in the state’s most populated county. My prediction? They won’t find anything, at least not legitimately.

However, there is not a damn thing legitimate about what is happening in Arizona and in Maricopa County.

The Big Lie purveyors, who hang on the lie promoted by Donald Trump that the election was “stolen” through vote fraud, are on the hunt for anything they can use to give validation to the phony assertion about fraud that did not exist.

The so-called “audit” of the ballots is being done by individuals and organizations with zero election experience. They are Trumpkins in disguise. They have stooped to looking for evidence — and this is fantastic! — of “bamboo” in the paper used in ballots to confirm specious assertions of manipulation by nefarious forces in Southeast Asia.

We are witnessing a ridiculous attempt spurred on by a ridiculous former POTUS to overturn the results of a fair, legal and free election.

Sheriff Goes Ballistic After Arizona Recounters Demand Access To County Passwords | HuffPost

There will be nothing constructive gained from this form of idiocy, other than to confirm that those who are seeking to overturn the results are, indeed, certifiable idiots.

They are being fed The Big Lie. They consume it willingly and seemingly with glee. They stand behind a man elected to the presidency and then defeated in his re-election bid only because they adhere to the nonsense and the lies he throws out there.

Now they are messing around with an electoral process that has been deemed “the most secure in U.S. history.” Who made that assertion? Donald Trump’s choice to protect the electoral system, Christopher Krebs, who then got “rewarded” for doing his job by getting fired by the Liar in Chief. Someone has to explain to me how that makes a lick of sense.

So it is that the Big Lie is alive.

It is festering.

Cheney fights back

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney does not lack political moxie. Nor does she lack the courage to fight back against the loons within her Republican Party who continue to foment The Big Lie that poured first out of Donald Trump’s mouth.

Cheney faces the prospect of losing her leadership post within the GOP caucus in the House of Representatives. Why? Because she isn’t backing down in her criticism of Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 presidential election being “stolen” from him.

She said this on Twitter: The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.

The “anyone” to whom she refers would be the ex-POTUS himself.

I am going to stand with Rep. Cheney on this one, even though she represents — in most instances — the far right wing of a party in the midst of a civil war.

Cheney is on the right side of history. The Trumpkins who want her removed from her leadership post are flirting with disaster.

Recount? Really?

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

Is this the new modus operandi for candidates who lose contests for public office?

They get fewer votes than the winner and then yap and yammer about alleged “irregularities” in the counting of the ballots. So it is happening now in the just completed race for mayor of Amarillo, Texas.

Mayor Ginger Nelson was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote. Her closest challenger was someone named Claudette Smith (about whom I know nothing), who finished with 29 percent of the total vote. Let’s see, that’s a 25-percentage point difference between first and second.

And yet, Smith wants a recount. She said this, according to the Amarillo Globe-News: “Since Election Day, I have been inundated with inquiries regarding the outcome and integrity of the election. At the request of a very large number of citizens, I filed a petition for a recount,” Smith said in a statement given to the Globe-News on Tuesday after the Globe-News’ print deadline. “Another candidate on the ballot (in a different race) has requested a recount as well. Many citizens have expressed that the incumbent in my race barely missed a runoff by 4%, which equates to around 800 votes. Additionally, there are a number of questionable incidents that occurred during the election that are being looked at. As a candidate, I pay for the cost of the recount. It does not cost the taxpayers anything. I have agreed to pay these costs. If it was a fair and honest election, I don’t see any reason anyone should object to a recount. It’s what the people want and so that’s what I’ve decided to do.”

Update: Smith comments on recount request submitted for Amarillo mayor race (msn.com)

Ah, ha! There it is! She says Nelson fell just 800 votes of being forced into a runoff. Therefore, Smith said, she needs to recount the tally. Good grief.

The only redeeming quality of this farce is that Smith is going to foot the bill for a recount.

Still, I believe it will prove to be a monumental waste of time.  Oh, and Smith had better not claim any sort of “election theft.”

GOP testing POTUS’s patience

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

Every human being who’s ever lived has limits to his or her patience.

My strong sense is that the today’s Republican Party leadership is testing the wellspring of patience that rests within President Biden.

If only the GOP honchos would wean themselves of the Big Lie being fed to them by Donald J. Trump and his minions about the 2020 election. If only the Republican hierarchy would divest its interest in seeking to overturn a free and fair election. If only they would act as American patriots instead of lunatic wackos.

Trump sits on the sidelines these days. He isn’t silent. He keeps yammering about the phony vote fraud that has prompted the “audit” of Arizona’s election returns. He continues to suggest the election was stolen. He never provides a scintilla of proof for any of the outrageous lies he keeps repeating.

Yet the GOP congressional leadership keeps gobbling it up. It presents itself as being responsible stewards of our federal government. They aren’t. They are responsible only to the former Imbecile in Chief. Damn few of them can say a single critical word about the Big Lie.

Meanwhile, we have a president who wants to enact some big programs. We are fighting a pandemic. We are trying to recover economically from the havoc it has brought. President Biden cannot get the GOP to sign on to what should be a bipartisan effort. Why is that? Because too many of the loyal opposition’s leadership is too wedded to the Big Lie.

The president’s patience surely has its limits.

Time and money wasted

By John Kanelis / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

You need to pay careful attention to what I intend to say here, which is that an invaluable amount of time and money is being spent in Arizona to determine whether a free and fair election was conducted, well … freely and fairly.

Spoiler alert: It was conducted fairly and was relatively corruption-free.

That, however, is not dissuading Arizona Republican Party officials from conducting an “audit” of more than 2 million ballots cast in the state’s largest county, Maricopa, which — I hasten to add — voted for Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee for president in 2020.

Now, to be fair, the Biden margin of victory over Donald J. Trump wasn’t huge. It was only a little more than 45,000 votes out of the total cast in the sprawling county. Will the election audit produce the kind of swing that GOP loons want to occur? Hah! I wouldn’t bet your sturdiest pair of jeans on that happening.

And what do you suppose it would do to the overall Electoral College outcome if by some miracle that hell freezes over and they overturn the election result in Arizona? Not a damn thing. Joe Biden still would be elected president and Donald Trump still would be banished to his posh south Florida resort.

The Arizona Republic reported:

Former President Donald Trump on Friday praised GOP senators in Arizona for their “tireless efforts” to recount millions of Maricopa County ballots, predicting the massive review would produce startling findings.

Despite prior audits — and a host of election lawsuits — failing to turn up evidence of Joe Biden “stealing” the presidency, Trump thanked the lawmakers for “the incredible job they are doing in exposing the large scale voter fraud” in the 2020 election.

Startling findings? Hah! There he goes again, fomenting the Big Lie about phony vote fraud.

Arizona election audit updates: Pause in recount appears off as Democrats won’t post bond (msn.com)

I am going to say this for as long as I can string a cogent thought or two together: There was no rampant vote fraud in the 2020 election.

Think for just a moment about this fact: If you are an election official anywhere in the United States and you know about the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, you are going to work double- and triple-overtime to ensure that the process is squeaky clean.

Does anyone with a half a noodle in their skull believe there was anything approaching the hanky-panky that Trump and his cabal of goons suggest occurred?

Donald Trump talked about the media being the “enemy of the people.” He has it all wrong. The 45th president of the United States is the enemy we all should fear.

Mitch backs down … who knew?

By JOHN KANELIS / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has taken back what he said about Major League Baseball, Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines’ decision to oppose a controversial Georgia vote law.

He said that big business should stay out of politics. McConnell admitted he didn’t speak “artfully” about the firms’ opposition to regulations that critics contend limit voters’ access to casting ballots.

McConnell backs away from warning businesses to stay out of politics (msn.com)

The truth is that McConnell has been exposed once again as the political hypocrite for which he has become infamous. You see, McConnell said that the Supreme Court’s decision in 2010 to allow corporations to contribute unlimited amounts of political money was, um, all right with him. The case became known as “Citizens United.”

So, it was all right for corporations to donate to GOP campaigns but not all right when they oppose GOP-friendly legislation and laws.

Don’t get me wrong. I am glad that GOP leader McConnell has switched gears on this matter. I just felt the need to put it in some context that McConnell chose to overlook.
