Just suppose for a moment that Donald J. Trump actually becomes a presidential candidate in 2024.
What is this twice-impeached former POTUS going to use as a campaign slogan? He is facing the probability of being indicted by the feds or state prosecutors on a number of alleged crimes.
However, there is some chatter out there that a presidential candidacy actually might shield him from being prosecuted by the authorities.
I can see it now: Support Trump … your vote will keep him out of prison.
Donald J. Trump keeps dropping hints along the trail, kinda like breadcrumbs, that he is “strongly considering” a third campaign for the presidency.
I don’t think so.
He might announce his intention to run. He might go through the motions. He might act as if he’s in the hunt for the White House.
I just continue to believe that another U.S. citizen is going to have plenty to say about whether The Donald runs again.
That would be Attorney General Merrick Garland, who I continue to believe is preparing to indict the former one-term, twice-impeached POTUS of multiple felonies.
Imagine my (non)surprise that Donald J. Trump hasn’t said a damn thing about the brutal attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
A moron attacked Paul Pelosi in the couple’s home in San Francisco, inflicting serious injuries, including a skull fracture.
The assailant entered the house asking, “Where’s Nancy?”
Although the SF police — who took the assailant into custody — haven’t established a motive, it appears clear the moron was acting on his political instincts.

Of course, Speaker Pelosi and the former POTUS have been longtime foes. Trump would consider her “the enemy.”
Still, the ex-president should show some decency in expressing publicly his sorrow over the attack on Paul Pelosi. Oh, wait! I almost forgot!

Vengeance politics is alive and flourishing in what passes for the hearts of many contemporary politicians.
These days, I refer to our Republican members of Congress. They are salivating over the prospect of the GOP taking control of the legislative branch of government after the midterm election.
What’s causing the collective drool? The idea of investigating Democrats who — in their sordid minds — have committed high crimes and misdemeanors.
None other than Ohio blowhard Jim Jordan, the GOP House member accused of looking the other way while Ohio State coaches were molesting young athletes, has promised investigations once Republicans take control of the House. It’s hard to take Jordan seriously, given his blind fealty to the MAGA agenda, but I will take him seriously, indeed.
They want to investigate Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the immigration “crisis” on our southern border. They want to investigate soon-to-retire senior White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci for dishing out bad advice on handling the COVID pandemic.
Some of the wackier among them want to impeach President Biden for … good grief, only God knows what lurks in their shallow brains.
Meanwhile, we have legislative matters that need attention Gun violence is one of them. Climate change, too. How about energy policy, or immigration policy, or reproductive rights issues? Does any of that interest the MAGA wing of the GOP? Hell … no!
They want revenge over Democrats outrage at the conduct of the most recent GOP president, the moron who sought political help from a foreign government and then incited the assault on our nation’s government after the 2020 presidential election. The House impeached him twice for those two misdeeds, but the cowards who comprise the Republican caucus in the Senate couldn’t muster up the courage to convict him of the obvious crimes he committed against the government he took an oath to “preserve and protect.”
If it comes to pass that Republicans take control of the House and Senate, I am going to stand watch to make sure I use this blog to remind them all of the oaths they, too, will take. They will place their hands on holy books and pledge to defend the Constitution of the United States. I fear their actions will put that document in danger.
Donald John Trump has been formally summoned to appear before the 1/6 House select committee examining the insurrection that Trump incited.
Except that Trump keeps insisting he did not do a damn thing wrong. That his challenge of the 2020 presidential election result is valid and that he has proof of “widespread voter fraud.”
But, wait! He hasn’t presented a shred of evidence to back his specious contention of non-existent widespread fraud.
We now are going to see whether this individual believes in the rule of law. Will he appear before the panel? Will he tell House members the “whole truth?” Will he dispel any notion that his fiery speech on the Ellipse on 1/6 intended to result in the frontal assault on the government?

This individual who pretends to stand for toughness, truth and the American Way is likely to cower behind the Fifth Amendment constitutional guarantee against self-incrimination. That’s his right. It also suggests to me that he is guilty as hell … just as he said of those associated with criminal activity involving his political foes.
Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former senior adviser and designated hit man, is now set to serve four months in prison for defying a congressional subpoena.
I won’t quibble over the length of the sentence. Prosecutors sought a six-month prison term. They got most of what they sought. That’s fine.
I do, though, want Bannon to serve the hardest time possible given the nature of his crime. He thumbed his nose at a duly constituted congressional committee’s demand that he testify about what he knew during 1/6 insurrection. It is a form of judicial obstruction, which to my mind makes it a damn serious crime.
He’ll come out of the slammer in four months, likely smirking and preening the way he does. At least he will carry an addendum to his background he likely didn’t anticipate when he entered the political world: convicted felon.
Donald J. Trump has been summoned to testify before the House select 1/6 committee, but none of us should hold our breath waiting for the ex-POTUS to actually testify … under oath.
The former president who insists he did nothing wrong, that he didn’t incite the assault on the Capitol on 1/6 is going to act like someone who is as guilty as hell. He will stall, delay, obstruct and otherwise do all he can do to stall his testimony.
And all of it will produce a ton of evidence that Trump is as guilty as the dickens.
The former Imbecile in Chief is seeking to prevent his testimony.
Now, I have to wonder: Why would an innocent man want to prevent testifying before a duly constituted congressional committee? You and I know the answer to that. It’s because he can’t tell the truth if his life depended on it and, therefore, the truth is going to convict him.
This individual should prepare for being served with an indictment.
GRANTS, N.M. –– This story got past me until this recently when my wife and I ventured through New Mexico en route to points west.
It involves New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who according to reports I read followed the Donald J. Trump playbook of paying an accuser a lot of money while denying the accusation leveled against her.
Grisham, a Democrat, forked over 150 grand to a former campaign staffer who said she grabbed by his crotch — in front of a lot of people. He complained, threatened legal action and then got paid the money to keep quiet.
Except that Lujan and her allies deny the event took place.
All of this makes me scratch my noggin and ask: If it didn’t happen, then why pay the dough?
Remind you of anything? How about the $130,000 that Trump paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels who said the two of them took a one-night tumble right after the birth of Trump’s fifth child from his third wife.
Trump denies to this day it happened … but he forked over the cash because he wanted Daniels to be quiet about the non-encounter.
Weird, man.
Gov. Grisham’s denial now sounds just as phony.
Donald J. Trump is clearly the gift that keeps on giving, with every revelation, every new development, every single lie he is caught uttering.
Now comes word that he sought to work out a deal with the National Archives to keep secret information related to his 2016 involvement with Russia during that year’s presidential campaign.
The deal never came through, but the revelation adds more fuel to the inferno that is beginning to consume the former president and his efforts to keep presidential records away from the public … which is the rightful owner of these documents.
Legal experts now say it’s no longer a matter of “if” Trump gets indicted by the Department of Justice, but now is a matter of “when” the attorney general will drop the hammer.
I cannot stop shaking my noggin over this stuff.
It reveals all the things many of us feared the moment Donald Trump took the oath of office to become POTUS, that he had no understanding of the importance of managing high-level communications. He treated all of them as they were his personal property. They aren’t.
Now we have this latest bit of drama.

Make no mistake that I will go to my grave not ever knowing or understanding how a leading politician can speak with such promising rhetoric about political transition only to toss every single word he said four years earlier into the crapper.
Former President Barack H. Obama spoke to the nation the day after Donald J. Trump got elected president in 2016. He spoke glowingly of the president-elect’s commitment to a smooth transition from one administration to the next one. Obama spoke of the message he gleaned from Trump’s remarks the previous evening, about how Trump intends to be president for “all Americans.”
Then it all caved in.
Trump lost his bid for re-election and chose to ignore all the things he had said as he prepared to take office four years earlier. At one level, I wasn’t surprised, given that I learned early in Trump’s political career not to believe a single thing that came out of his mouth.
Then again, the eternal optimist that lurks inside me had hoped that he meant what he said in 2016 as he prepared to take office. Silly me. Barack Obama got fooled, too. As did Hillary Clinton.
All that noble talk about smooth transition was plowed asunder when Trump lost the 2020 election. He has attacked our democratic process in word and — as we witnessed on 1/6 — in deed. That begs a serious question: How do serious-minded American patriots square the words of a man who pledged unity and peaceful transition square that with what he did four years later?
I admit freely to being a bit slow on the uptake on some matters. This must be one of them. Therefore, I’ll just consign my pending visit to the hereafter with an acknowledgment that I do not — I cannot — grasp how this individual lives with himself.
