Finally, the truth from a GOP senator

Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds of North Dakota received a direct question Sunday on whether the 2020 presidential election was “rigged,” or whether it was “stolen” from Donald J. Trump.

Here is what Rounds said:

“We looked — as a part of our due diligence, we looked at over 60 different accusations made in multiple states.

“While there were some irregularities, there were none of the irregularities which would have risen to the point where they would have changed the vote outcome in a single state.

“The election was fair, as fair as we have seen. We simply did not win the election, as Republicans, for the presidency. And moving forward — and that’s the way we want to look at this — moving forward, we have to refocus once again on what it’s going to take to win the presidency.

“And if we simply look back and tell our people don’t vote because there’s cheating going on, then we’re going to put ourselves in a huge disadvantage. So, moving forward, let’s focus on what it takes to win those elections. We can do that. But we have to let people know that they can — they can believe, and they can have confidence that those elections are fair.”

Well … there you go. A Republican member of the U.S. Senate has told the truth about what most of us have known all along. It is that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in 2020.

Biden lays out curious dilemma

President Biden today laid out a most fascinating aspect of The Big Lie as he marked the first year since the former Liar in Chief incited the riot that sought to overturn our democratic process.

The Big Lie as told and retold by the 45th POTUS is that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. Why, then, did Republicans do so well down the rest of the ballot in many states? Biden asked, wondering why GOP candidates running for governor and Congress weren’t bitching about “rigged” returns.

He answered his question. It was because the only candidate for public office to question the integrity of the election system was the GOP candidate for POTUS. He lost the election. He won’t accept the result. So, he decided to cast aspersions on the election officials who conducted the most secure election in U.S. history.

Indeed, if there were serious flaws in the integrity of the election, there surely would have been questions asked about all the down-ballot races that were decided by razor-thin margins.

Just to be clear: the contest for president of the United States in 2020 did not fit the category of “narrow victory.”

Few discrepancies found

Well, what do you know about this? The first reports of the ā€œforensic auditā€ that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott launched ā€” at the behest of Donald J. Trump ā€” of balloting in four Texas counties shows minuscule discrepancies.

That means the voting was not rife with ā€œwidespreadā€ fraud that Trump has alleged without offering a shred of evidence.

Trump came to Texas this past summer and got Abbott to call for an audit of four of the stateā€™s most populous counties: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Collin. I live in Collin County. Of the counties audited, Collin voted for Trump narrowly, while the rest of them all voted for President Biden.

The Texas Tribune reported:Ā The first phase of the review,Ā released New Yearā€™s Eve, highlighted election data from four counties ā€” Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Collin ā€” that showed few discrepancies between electronic and hand counts of ballots in a sample of voting precincts. Those partial manual counts made up a significant portion of the results produced by the secretary of state, which largely focused on routine voter roll maintenance and post-election processes that were already in place before the state launched what it has labeled as a ā€œfull forensic audit.ā€

Hmm. Iā€™ll go out on a limb and suggest that the audit of these counties wonā€™t find anything worth mentioning. The audit that Abbott seeks was done because Trump continues to perpetuate The Big Lie about the results of the 2020 election. Trump lost! Biden won! The election was fair and legal and clean. Texas went for Trump, giving the then-POTUS its 38 electoral votes.

However, Trump wants to continue fostering doubt into the most secure election in U.S. history.

I will say once again that Donald Trumpā€™s Big Lie only defames the hard work done at the local level by elections officials who take an oath to ensure that our elections are secure.

When will lying stop?

Someone once said ā€” and I am going to paraphrase it ā€” that a lie can lap the field before the truth jumps out of the starting blocks.

So it is with the myriad lies that continue to flood our minds, our airwaves, our newspaper columns. The lies deal with mostly with The Big Lie, the one that suggests that the 2020 presidential election was ā€œstolenā€ from Donald Trump. It wasnā€™t, of course.

When will the lying run its course? When will enough of us will say, ā€œEnough is enough; enough, already!ā€?

Will that moment arrive sometime in this new year that is about to dawn on us? Someone needs to tell me, ā€œYes. It will happen.ā€

Too many Americans continue to kneel in front of the cult leader who once occupied the U.S. presidency. He is perpetuating The Big Lie. He has yet to say out loud that Joe Biden defeated him in the freest, fairest, most legal, most secure presidential election in U.S. history. He talks about the election being ā€œriggedā€ in 2020 and yet he seeks to rig it in real terms by persuading state election officials to pursuing legal avenues to overturn the results of the most recent presidential election.

Do you see the irony in this ā€œrigged electionā€ scenario?

I am acutely aware of the naivete in wishing the lying will stop. I know that politicians of all stripes arenā€™t always truthful. They say they are, but we all know better. The lying that comes from the Trump cultists takes that truism an illogical step further.

Accuse me of being naive if you wish. I will declare right here that I want the lying to stop and I will express the hope that my wish will come true.

If only he would call off the cultists

This won’t happen, not ever, but I feel the compelling need to get something off my chest.

One man can stop the intimidation, bullying and threats against local election workers, if only he possessed a shred of decency.

Donald John Trump is wholly responsible for fomenting the anger that continues to fester against those who do their jobs the best they can, only to be undermined by the former POTUS who continues to insist that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him via “widespread voter fraud.”

It wasn’t. President Biden won fairly, legally and ethically.

Yet the former POTUS continues to inflame passions with The Big Lie. He is posing a dire threat to those who acknowledge publicly that the cultists who follow the former POTUS are threatening them. Worse, they are threatening election officials’ families, including their children.

One such official from Pennsylvania told a congressional hearing today about the continual threats he gets from supporters of the man who lost the 2020 election. Supporters of the ex-POTUS have called this fellow a “traitor” because he refused to reverse the results of the election. Traitor! Think about that for a moment … maybe two.

This is the new normal? Is this where we have sunk? Is this the kind of nation we have become, that individuals who do their jobs in accordance with the law cannot go through the day without facing verbal and actual threats by those who disagree with the outcome of a free and fair election?

One guy holds the key to bringing all of this to an end. He could call a press conference and demand without equivocation that his supporters must stop … as in right now.

He won’t do that. Because he lacks the moral character to do the right thing.

Patrick’s ‘bounty’ payoff affirms refusal to give money

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has affirmed for me why I generally do not give money to political candidates.

Campaign finance law allows them to spend it foolishly, as Patrick has just done by shelling out $25,000 to a Pennsylvania poll watcher who caught a single individual voting illegally in that state in 2020.

Patrick had promised to pay as much as $1 million to anyone who could prove “widespread voter fraud” in the 2020 election. He has sent just one check, though, totaling 25K to the poll watcher.

You see, there isn’t any “widespread vote fraud” to be found. Not in Texas. Not in Pennsylvania. Nowhere, man!

Which brings me back to my point. The money came from Patrick’s campaign stash. If I had given money to Patrick’s campaign, I would be damn angry that he is spending a dime of his campaign money for this kind of foolishness. It comes from the pockets of those who believe in a candidate.

It boggles my noggin to think that anyone who gave to this blowhard’s campaign would actually endorse his writing a check for a single case of someone voting illegally … in another state!

Yes, but he still lost!

Those who adhere to the cult beliefs of the 45th president of the United States keep telling us that the will and wishes of “74 million American voters” should not be ignored.

OK. I get that. More than 74 million voters cast their ballots for the guy who finished second in the race for the presidency in 2020. That is the second-greatest vote total ever recorded; the greatest vote total was rolled up by President Biden, who pulled in more than 81 ballots.

And, yes, they were legitimately cast ballots.

So, to the sore losers who cannot accept that their guy finished second in a two-man for the presidency in 2020 I say only: Get the fu** over it!

They won’t. Not as long as their cult hero continues to foment The Big Lie about vote fraud and insist that even with all the “forensic audits” he is demanding that he still won the 2020 election.

There have been many photo finishes over many decades of presidential elections. Richard Nixon lost to John F. Kennedy by 100,000 votes in 1960; he accepted the result and moved on. Al Gore lost to George W. Bush in 2000; that election wasn’t settled until the Supreme Court stopped a recount in Florida with Bush leading by 537 ballots; Bush was awarded the state’s electoral votes and he took the oath … after Gore conceded defeat and pledged his support of the new president.

The yammering that continues to this day about POTUS 45 collecting 74 million votes ignores the obvious, which is that his opponent received 7 million more votes and won the election!

How many times must one say the same thing, that The Big Lie being fomented by a defeated, twice-impeached POTUS is destructive to the very institutions that the former Liar in Chief vowed to protect and defend?

Yet he keeps telling it. That the 2020 election was “stolen” through “widespread voter fraud,” that President Biden isn’t really the president of the United States, that the ex-POTUS actually won an election he lost bigly!

But he does. He tells the lie. The gullible among his cadre/cabal of believers buy into it. They cannot be dissuaded that their leader is a pathological liar who cannot tell the truth if it were to slap him on his ample backside.

It’s a frustration that gnaws at people such as yours truly who continue to insist that the 2020 election was conducted freely, fairly, legally and ethically. I mean, the POTUS brought in a team of experts to ensure it would done that way prior to the election.

The team, led by election overseer Christopher Krebs, did what they were charged to do. They assembled a process that produced the most secure election in U.S. history. What did they get for their success? They got canned! The ex-Imbecile in Chief fired Krebs for proclaiming the election’s integrity.

So, the frustration mounts as the former POTUS keeps conveying The Big Lie and cementing his place as the most dangerous former POTUS in American history.

The Big Lie must die

I had hoped ā€” seriously, I did ā€” that the results of the phony Arizona ā€œauditā€ of the 2020 election would signal an end to The Big Lie that Donald J. Trump keeps repeating.

That the election was ā€œstolenā€ from him. It wasnā€™t.

I must be a shmuck. Itā€™s only gotten even more preposterous.

Indeed, the phony audit conducted by Cyber Ninjas confirmed President Bidenā€™s victory in Arizona. Indeed, Biden collected a few more votes than before the Cyber Ninjas started their forensic ā€œauditā€ of ballots cast in Maricopa County.

Thatā€™s the end of it? Hardly. The 45th POTUS, the former Dipsh** in Chief, called for a forensic audit in Texas, which heĀ wonĀ in the 2020 election. He continues to insist that The Big Lie is the big truth. He continues to denigrate our governmental process. It denigrates our local elections officials who worked tirelessly prior to the 2020 election to ensure its fairness, legality, its accuracy and the integrity of its result.

Think about this for a moment. A president who took an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution has done everything he can to damage it. He incited a riot, an insurrection that sought to overturn the results of that election. POTUS 45 has yet to acknowledge publicly that he lost the election.

The most maddening aspect of this is that this clown continues to rally supporters who actually believe The Big Lie, that the election was so corrupt that President Biden couldnā€™t possibly have been elected fairly.

Their proof? The evidence? They donā€™t have any. The rely solely on the bellowing of the former POTUS, the king of sore losers, the guy who actually said after the Cyber Ninjas released the findings of their phony Arizona audit that he actually ā€œwonā€ the election.

The Big Lie needs to die.

Patriots? Phooey!

Life is full of uncertainty. However, of this I am totally, unequivocally certain: I will go to my grave never understanding how people who take an oath to protect the Constitution and then defy it openly can call themselves ā€œpatriots.ā€

I am referring to the nimrods who continue to adhere to The Big Lie, that the 2020 presidential election was the product of theft, that it was ā€œstolenā€ from Donald Trump by ā€œdeep stateā€ forces that conspired to install Joe Biden in the White House.

These individuals call themselves patriots because they believe they are right and that the rest of us ā€” the majority of Americans ā€” are wrong in our assessment that the most recent presidential election was conducted fairly and legally and ethically.

The 45th POTUS continues to rant and bellow about a theft that never occurred. He drops broad hints about wanting to run again in 2024 to get it all back.

He calls for states to ā€œauditā€ their returns from the 2020 election. The former Liar in Chief suggests that even after states complete their audits that he still won. He stands before crowds that cheer him on as he recites that utter nonsense.

These are ā€œpatriotsā€? These are Americans who believe in our system of government? These are dipsh**s cannot accept the notion of their guy losing a hotly contested election and then moving on to wage other fights on other issues?

These individuals are not real Americans. Sure, they are citizens of this country. They have the right to express themselves under the Constitutionā€™s guarantees of free speech and expression. ā€œReal Americans,ā€ though, are those who live by rules of fair play and accept defeat when it is as obvious as anything they can see.

They are not patriots.
