‘Fair and balanced’ now becomes ‘false and deceitful’

The hits just keep coming as they regard the Fox News Channel and the lies that continue to flow from a network that used to proclaim itself to be the “fair and balanced” presenter of news.

Wow! We hear now that Fox News personalities implored Donald J. Trump to stop the 1/6 insurrection. They emailed him, asked Don Jr. to tell Dad to make ’em stop rioting at Capitol Hill, urged White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to get Trump to intervene.

Trump did nothing. He didn’t heed the pleas of his own son, his own chief of staff or those of his favorite network talking heads.

A more serious aspect of this, though, are the lies that kept flowing from the pie holes of those same personalities. They told their viewers that the riot was not a big deal. That Trump was being vilified unfairly. That he didn’t incite anyone to “take back the government.”

The credibility — if you want to call it such — of the likes of Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Jeanine Pirro et al has been shattered into millions of pieces.

Unbelievable!

Pence starts GOP chatter

Former Vice President Mike Pence has the Republican Party faithful chattering about whether he plans to run for president in 2024.

Oh, my. Let ’em talk among themselves.

Pence visited New Hampshire recently to shake a few hands and talk to the locals about, oh, possibly a Pence candidacy for POTUS. He says he is focused only on helping GOP candidates running for Congress in 2022. Sure thing, Mr. VPOTUS. I believe that … not!

As The Hill notes, though, a Pence presidential candidacy is going to pi** off the GOP cultists who are angry over the way he conducted himself on 1/6. What did he do to anger the Donald Trump cult cabal? Oh, all he did was follow the law, the Constitution and the oath he took to obey both by refusing to block the certification of the 2020 election result that gave us President Biden and got rid of Donald Trump.

Pence fuels speculation of 2024 presidential bid | TheHill

Thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol on 1/6, some of them yelling “Hang Mike Pence!” I guess the thought is that many of still want the former VP to hang from the gallows.

Absolutely disgusting.

A Pence candidacy surely will lend plenty of drama to a GOP primary campaign that might also include the 45th POTUS.

Sheesh!

Donald, it wasn’t ‘calming’

Donald Trump continues to lie without shame, without an outward sense that he wouldn’t know the truth if it punched him in his overfed gut.

He is lying to this day about the remarks he delivered on the morning of 1/6 when he incited what I will take to my grave believing was an insurrection against the U.S. government.

“You’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong,” Trump said. “We fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

The former POTUS told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham that his remarks were “calming.” Do the remarks I posted in the previous paragraph sounding “calming” to you? Well, they weren’t. They aren’t at this moment, either.

Indeed, we continue to learn more about the lengths that Trump traveled to seek to overturn the results of the 2020 election that chose Joe Biden to become president of the United States.

How in the name of rhetorical gimmickry do “calming” remarks produce a crowd reaction such as what occurred on 1/6?

Calming remarks? Not even close!

Yes, contempt charges need to be filed

Now that Mark Meadows has declared his desire to be uncooperative with a congressional inquiry into the 1/6 insurrection, it is fair to ask: Should the House select committee with which Meadows once worked cite him for contempt of Congress?

Hmm. Let me think. OK, here goes: Hell yes it should!

Meadows served as chief of staff in the White House during Donald Trump’s final year as president. Prior to that, Meadows served Trump in another capacity: as a chief congressional apologist for the appalling conduct of Trump.

Former Trump policy adviser Steve Bannon has been cited for contempt of Congress and has been indicted on the allegation by a federal grand jury. He could spend a year in the slammer if he’s convicted. The penalty is far too light … but that’s another story for another blog post.

Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi need not waste too much time deciding whether to approve a motion to cite Meadows. It seems clearcut to me.

Meadows knows in intimate detail what went down in the White House on 1/6. He served at Donald Trump’s behest and knows what the president said and knew and when he said it and knew it.

Without a doubt Meadows possesses intimate knowledge of the president’s conduct. I daresay it’s relevant to what the committee needs to know and understand about what many of us consider a frontal assault on our democratic process. It was — in my humble view — an insurrection.

Mark Meadows knows what happened inside the White House that day. He needs to tell the world what he knows. The House select panel that is leading the search for the truth needs to force Meadows to spill the beans.

Meadows clams up to panel

You can just imagine how unsurprised I am to hear the news that former Donald Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is going to no longer cooperate with a congressional committee assigned to finding out the truth behind 1/6.

Tell me you’re surprised that Meadows has decided to clam up. If you do, I’ll call you a fool.

Meadows had revealed that he was cooperating “for now” with the House select committee appointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to root out the cause of the 1/6 insurrection/riot/coup attempt and to recommend ways to prevent it from happening ever again.

Now he’s backing away. He’s not going to provide the information the committee wants.

Meadows is a Trump toadie. A slathering sycophant. A babbling buffoon.

He also might find himself in jail, where he could join former White House policy guru Steve Bannon, who’s been indicted by the Justice Department for contempt of Congress. Bannon hasn’t yet been tried, but if he’s convicted, he faces a year in the slammer. Meadows might as well, too.

The entire world witnessed a hideous assault on our democracy on 1/6. The House panel, chaired by Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is on a mission to find out what happened when Trump incited the crowd to attack Capitol Hill while officials were certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Meadows knows more than he’s letting on. He needs to tell the truth. He vows to keep it from us. He needs to pay for his intransigence.

Why the delay and obstruction?

 (AP Photo/Jeffrey Phelps)

This has to rank, in my mind at least, as one of the great political mysteries in recent U.S. history.

Donald J. Trump keeps insisting he did nothing wrong while serving as POTUS for four years. He made a “perfect” phone call to the Ukrainian president asking for help in finding dirt on then-former VP Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. He insists he didn’t incite violence on 1/6, that he called for “peaceful” protest.

And yet …

This clown is engaging in the mother of stalling tactics. His minions won’t answer congressional subpoenas. Trump refuses to release his tax returns. He stalls, blocks, obfuscates. He is trying to run out the clock until the midterm election when, he hopes, Republicans get control of Congress.

Why this tactic if there is nothing to hide? If there is nothing see? If there was nothing wrong with the way he conducted himself in office?

Man, someone has to explain this one to me.

What does it take?

What in the name of political sanity will it take for congressional Republicans to comprehend the danger they pose for the country by enabling their cult leader to continue his assault on the U.S. Constitution?

Well, most of the GOP caucus, anyway.

Virtually all House and Senate Republicans continue to look the other way while the former Insurrectionist in Chief wages war against the Constitution. He wages war against the rule of law. He defies Congress and its efforts to get to the truth behind what I believe was a full-on frontal assault, an insurrection.

The former Liar in Chief is a danger to the nation he once governed and to the very principle of representative democracy.

Daily, damn near hourly, we hear new reports of efforts to block the result of the 2020 election. This individual won’t concede he lost to Joe Biden. He won’t allow his key aides and advisers to answer congressional subpoenas to testify about what they know about 1/6 and the riot that damn near took down our government.

This is a frightening example of how fealty to an individual presents an existential threat to the democratic government we all profess to love and cherish. Indeed, this moron took an oath to protect it. He now seeks to destroy it.

How can that possibly be acceptable in the eyes of these clowns who represent a formerly great political party?

It is a mystery I cannot solve. If only I could.

An insurrection? Yes, it was!

One man’s insurrection is another’s “peaceful protest.”

I guess it has come down to a matter of perspective. I happen to believe that 1/6 produced an insurrection against the federal government, while others seem to suggest that there was no such intent on the rioters who stormed Capitol Hill at the urging of the former Insurrectionist in Chief.

There is no more good to be had, it seems, in trying to persuade the insurrection deniers of what the whole world, the entire planet, witnessed that day. For the record, I just want to restate what I saw.

I watched a crowd crash through windows of the Capitol Building. The crowd was carrying signs that called for the hanging of the vice president of the United States. Custodial crews had to clean up human feces off the floor of offices. Rioters were heard on audio recordings reciting their intent to stop the certification of the Electoral College tally that elected President Biden. One of the rioters was shot to death by a Capitol cop. Another police officer died in the melee.

Were the rioters sincerely intent on stopping the vote tally? Or was it all a joke?

I don’t doubt the mob’s sincerity.

Thus, I consider it an insurrection, no matter what the FBI and others might have concluded. It damn sure wasn’t any sort of peaceful protest.

More subpoenas on tap

The world continues to spin faster and faster and I am trying like the dickens to hold on with both hands.

The House select committee that is examining the 1/6 riot/insurrection/attempted coup has issued six more subpoenas. They are looking at more individuals who worked within the upper echelon of the Donald Trump administration.

Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is wasting no time firing these orders out. Now comes the question: Will the former Trumpkins answer the summons to appear before the committee or will they follow the lead set by former Trump senior policy adviser Steve Bannon and be held in contempt of Congress?

If it were me — and thank God in heaven it ain’t — I’d answer the summons. I would sit before the committee, take the oath to tell the truth and then … tell the truth!

If Donald Trump insists that he did nothing wrong when he incited the rioters to storm Capitol Hill, then there’s no reason to demand his cultists stay away. Isn’t that right?

Sure it is!

187 minutes of hell …

It took Donald J. Trump more than three hours after the rioters stormed the Capitol Building — at his urging — to more or less call them off.

The then-POTUS did so while expressing his “love” for them and while extolling that they are “special people.”

Key aides were imploring Trump to call off the rioters on 1/6. He resisted. He didn’t do or say a single damn thing to stave off the rioters. Then came that ghastly “we love you” plea 187 minutes after it began to men and women who had defecated on the floor of the Senate, beaten through windows, injured several Capitol Police officers.

They were chanting their desire to “Hang Mike Pence!” and went looking for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi by yelling “Nancy … where are you?”

Unbelievable. Un-bleeping-believable!

But it happened. We know it now through some extraordinary reporting by the Washington Post.

To think there remains a segment of our nation’s citizenry who buy into the crap peddled by the former Liar in Chief.

God help us.
