Do we need tape recordings to prove racist view?

Omarosa Manigault Newman has dropped a few stools in the punch bowl regarding her former boss and (apparently) former friend, Donald John Trump.

She says she has heard tape recordings of the future president using the n-word to describe “Celebrity Apprentice” contestants. He account has been backed up by illusionist Penn Gillette, who says he heard Trump say it in the moment.

She’s written a book about her time as a special White House assistant, a post she left when chief of staff John Kelly fired her. Newman recorded the termination that occurred in the Situation Room, which is a serious breach of national security protocol. That, however, is a whole other story.

But I have to ask: Do we really need to hear these recordings to verify what has been virtually obvious? I mean, consider the following.

  • Trump fomented the lie about our first African American president’s place of birth.
  • He also challenged Barack Obama’s academic credentials that admitted him to Harvard Law.
  • Trump denigrates the intelligence of U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, CNN News anchor Don Lemon and pro basketball superstar LeBron James … all prominent African American public figures.
  • The president calls NFL football players protesting police brutality — the players are virtually all black — “sons of bitches.”
  • And all the while, he declines to issue a categorical condemnation of white supremacists, Klansmen and neo-Nazis.

Does the president refer to white critics as being less than intelligent? Why in the world did he continue to promote the defamatory lie that questioned President Obama’s constitutional right to seek the presidency? And why can’t the president bring himself to condemn hate groups such as the Klan exclusively? He recently watered down such “condemnation” with that sterile “all types of racism” qualifier.

Again, I ask: Do we really need to hear these recordings to validate what many millions of Americans — including me — believe about the man who’s been elected president of the United States of America?

This individual is a racist.

Trump is wearing me out

I’ve long considered myself to be a fairly modern fellow … but I do like tradition.

I dislike the designated hitter rule in baseball, I dislike what I call “gymnasium football” that is played in stadiums with roofs, I prefer to eat my salad before consuming my entrée — and I want presidents of the United States to behave in a manner befitting the office.

Donald J. Trump cannot fix the first three examples, but he damn sure can address the final one, dealing with how he handles himself as president.

We aren’t even one stinking month into Trump’s term in office and I am worn out already. I don’t know if I have the stamina to keep up with this guy’s weird/bizarre/goofy machinations.

The tweeting. The strange utterances. The strange phone calls with world leaders. His feuds with congressional leaders. The strange roles his sons and daughter are playing in his administration. The notion that his wife won’t live in the White House while hubby seeks to “make America great again.”

None of this is what I consider to be “normal.”

What continues to trouble me about this fellow is that I cannot figure out to what ever-lovin’ end is he seeking to accomplish.

Trump had zero public service experience when he announced his candidacy for the presidency in July 2015. His entire adult life has been geared toward personal enrichment. Public service never has been on this man’s radar. He doesn’t know what public service entails.

And not yet one month into his presidency, he isn’t showing any indication that I can discern that he grasps the concept of public service.

He stands before the National Prayer Breakfast audience and asks them to pray for the man who succeeded him as host of “Celebrity Apprentice”; he goes to the CIA and — standing before a wall that honors fallen CIA officers — talks about his electoral vote “landslide”; he berates Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over his country’s immigration policy and then hangs up on the head of government of a nation that arguably is our most loyal ally.

Presidents of the United States don’t normally behave like this.

Holy cow, man! We’ve got 47 more months of this!

Maybe.

Arnold vs. Donald: so ‘unpresidented’

Donald Trump has become tweeter in chief.

His latest foil is another former prominent politician, a guy named Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two men connected by a reality TV show, “Celebrity Apprentice,” have been tweeting back and forth for a couple of days now.

Honestly, it is so damn “unpresidented” — to borrow a term — that it’s driving me batty.

Trump is telling us how “Apprentice” ratings have tanked since he left the show to become, um, president of the United States of America. Arnold — the current host of the show — has responded with a seemingly tongue-in-cheek attack on the president, suggesting the two men switch jobs; if only the U.S. Constitution would allow the Austria-born Schwarzenegger to do the job that Trump now holds.

I know this plea will fall on deaf ears. My Trumpkin friends who read this blog will scoff at me; the anti-Trumpkins out there might express some sorrow for my persistence.

Still, this activity by the president of the United States is so unbecoming of his office. I get that Arnold bears some responsibility as well, given that he once was a consequential governor of the nation’s most populous, wealthiest state — and who once was married to a member of two of the nation’s most prominent political families: Maria Shriver.

Maybe I should just heed my own advice and ignore this ridiculous behavior. I should stop commenting on it with this blog.

I guess I have to acknowledge that I am doing Trump’s bidding by calling attention to it, no matter how negatively I feel about it.

There, I just did. I still don’t like it.

Put down the Twitter device, Mr. President. You’ve got many more infinitely more important matters to occupy your waking hours. This is no way to “make America great again.”

Collusion between … Donald and Arnold?

I smell a stinky rat.

Donald J. Trump stood before the National Prayer Breakfast audience — of all places — and poked fun at the ratings of “Celebrity Apprentice,” which is now hosted by one-time muscleman/movie actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Arnold responded with a video dig at the president, suggesting the two men should trade jobs, given that Trump is such an expert on TV ratings. Arnold said he could become president and therefore enable Americans to “sleep comfortably at night.”

Oh, wait! Donald used to host the “Apprentice.” He retains the title of executive producer, even though he’s now got a fairly full plate trying to “make America great again.”

Might there possibly be a wink-wink agreement between the men to gin up a fake controversy to, um, boost ratings — and deliver more money to the president of the United States of America?

Why, such a thing would be so very “unpresidented.”

If only Arnold could switch with Trump …

I do not favor amending the U.S. Constitution to allow naturalized U.S. citizens to run for president of the United States.

But a brief retort from a noted former politician/superstar actor/turned reality TV host has me pondering. What if … ?

Donald J. Trump tossed a dig at Arnold Schwarzenegger over his ratings as the new host of “Celebrity Apprentice.” He made the remark at the National Prayer Breakfast — of all places — this morning. “Pray for Arnold,” the president said.

Sheesh!

Well, Arnold — a former California governor — responded to Trump. It’s in the link below.

Arnold said that since Trump is an “expert” at ratings, let’s switch jobs.

It has me thinking. You know I think I actually would vote for Arnold for president were he eligible to run for the office. Too bad the Austria-born muscleman can’t.

Is this one of those ‘brilliant people’?

Donald J. Trump promised Americans that he would surround himself with “brilliant people” as he formed his government, not to mention when he actually began governing as president of the United States.

His latest high-profile hire for his transition team, though, is a head-scratcher.

Omarosa Manigault has joined the Trump transition team. The president-elect made a bit of a show of the hire. Manigault was a contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice,” the show that Trump ran before he became a politician.

I’ll stipulate that I never watched the show. I don’t know much about this young woman, other than what I’ve read — which isn’t much.

She worked for Trump’s campaign as an African-American outreach advocate. She sought to boost the Republican nominee’s standing with black voters.

She reportedly then let slip that Trump was keeping an enemies list. We older folks remember an earlier enemies list, which President Nixon formed to keep track of those who opposed him.

“Let me just tell you, Mr. Trump has a long memory, and we’re keeping a list,” she said.

Well. There you have it.

Back to my original point. Omarosa’s role with the Trump transition has me wondering: What in the world does she bring to the forming of the next government?

Is she one of the brilliant people? Just askin’, man.

Trump to make use of his ‘spare time’

Kellyanne Conway is a master spinner.

I actually kind of admire Donald J. Trump’s winning campaign manager’s skill at political spin.

Let’s consider her answer to questions about the president-elect’s decision to remain as executive producer of “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Trump will do his “Apprentice” work in his “spare time,” Conway is saying. Spare time? Yep. When the president isn’t busy providing for our national defense, creating millions of jobs for Americans and fighting ISIS terrorists to the hilt, he’s going to devote some of his energy to the reality TV show he started.

The president has a full day on most days anyway. In Trump’s case — if we are to take his campaign rhetoric at face value — he’ll be busy as the dickens “making America great again.” How is he ever going to have the time to work on “Celebrity Apprentice” episodes?

Conway noted that President Obama spent a lot of time on the golf course during his eight years in office. Indeed, I argued on this blog that the president is never off the clock, that he’s the head of state 24/7.

So it will be with Donald Trump. He’ll be at the helm every waking moment of every day he serves as president of the United States.

If a president can take time playing a round of golf to relax, I suppose another president can take time to produce a reality TV show.

Of course, the TV show and the compensation the president will earn from it does present a situation that the network’s news division — NBC in this instance — will have in covering the president.

In the meantime, I will stand by an earlier comment, which is that a president who doubles as a reality TV show producer — and this is just for starters — is just plain weird.
