Yes, I am surprised

By JOHN KANELIS / johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com

National media are full of pundits, analysts and others who are proclaiming their lack of “surprise” at the horrifying events that unfolded in the District of Columbia.

I am not going to join that chorus. Instead, I am going to offer an apology to those I have spoken to privately that the tragedy we witnessed today caught me by surprise.

Maybe I am slow on the uptake. Maybe I just didn’t take Donald Trump as seriously as I should have when he continued to fan the embers of mistrust about the 2020 election’s integrity. Just maybe I overestimated the quality of the rank-and-file Trumpkin Corps of believers in this guy’s cult of personality.

I suppose my surprise makes the events that unfolded today seem all the more frightening. Having been blessed tonight with a bit of hindsight over what happened, I know understand more clearly that we all should have been more alert to what could happen.

The cabal of kooks who sought to challenge President-elect Biden’s victory over Trump in November have committed an act of sedition against the United States. I have no doubt about that.

As a member of my family said tonight, perhaps their being forced to lie face-down on the floor under their desks while protesters stormed the Capitol building will persuade them to cease this idiotic, moronic protest of the Electoral College tally.

One would think.

However, I am left now to ponder a reality I truly didn’t see coming. It is that Donald Trump is a Pied Piper who leads a horde of mindless minions who today proved their willingness to stop a branch of our federal government from performing their constitutional duty.

  1. Just like summer riots, it was very few that we involved in the violence. Sadly, there’s ignorance everywhere. That being said, there should be no way our Capital building could be entered like this. We can’t to an airport terminal without major screening.

On another note, you do realize we are now in a one party system. Check your history. It’s never worked out for the majority.

  2. Hell just froze over. I will agree with you on one point, that one-party rule doesn’t work. Don’t know if we have a one-party system. Republicans should remain active and vocal, but only after they pull their heads out of Trump’s ass and start acting like a principled political party. I hope that happens. Truly, I do want a strong GOP to contribute to our national dialogue.

  3. Personally, I don’t think we have Democrats or Republicans, as you and I know them. They both have move so far right and left they are unrecognizable.

I stated a couple years ago that didn’t want the Republicans to win the House. That would have created a one party system as well. My concern right now is the electoral college. It was mentioned by Democrats again last night to abolish it. The will leave the coastal cities to decide our President. The rest of the United States will be irrelevant.

There does need a major overhaul of our election system. Without it, citizens won’t have confidence to vote. I have no ideas if any fraud took place. There are numerous things that seemed sketchy in some areas. An election shouldn’t look sketchy in a free world.

  4. Hell is still frozen. I agree with you about the Electoral College. Its founding was done for the right reasons. They hold up today. There. That said, there was no fraud on anything close to approaching the scale that Trump has implied. Period. Full stop. End of discussion on that one. Have a good day.

  5. I agree with you on the level of fraud that Trump claims. But, any amount of fraud is to much and should be investigated. To many feel the process is not fair or accurate, including Democrats. I’ve spoken to several die hard Democrats and they have stated they have questions about Pennsylvania and Georgia. Their concerns, or mine, are not to the level that would change the outcome. But there sure seems to be something going on there.

Enough of this. Have a great day and hopefully better days are ahead for all of us. I know I pray on it daily.
