Wow! Trump lashes out at GOP ethics-gutting move

It’s official.

Hell has officially frozen over. Earth is about to spin off its axis. The sun will rise in the west tomorrow morning.

Donald J. Trump has broken ranks with congressional Republicans who, in a surprise move, decided to weaken significantly its ethical oversight function.

The president-elect tweeted his criticism of the GOP leadership’s effort get rid of a bipartisan watchdog group and hand oversight to the House Ethics Committee.

Trump tweeted: “may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance!

The “DTS” hashtag stands for “drain the swamp,” which Trump had pledged to do.

OK, the president-elect’s desire to repeal Obamacare and slash taxes for wealthy Americans is up for discussion, but I’m glad to see him taking the House Republican leadership to task for its effort to gut a valuable weapon to guard against congressional corruption.

Good deal, right? We’ll have to see what he thinks about ethics reform and swamp-draining in, oh, the next few hours. These things, as we know, can be subject to change.

I’ve noticed your commentaries display aspects of “1960s liberalism” – refreshing to this classical liberal. This may be a function of your age and military service.

    So much for pop-psych.

I have been “polyannish” about Trump – especially since Cruz dropped out of the GOP race. I suspect that despite the Pres-Elect’s tendency to “run his mouth” (his “Id”) there IS a grownup in there (his “super-ego”) that will temper his actual policy.

I’d like to believe the grownup just weighed in on the House pulling teeth from the OCE’s “maw”.

(fun to use such metphors – don’t you think?)

(and OK, OK – MORE pop-psych)

This morning NPR spent about five minutes introducing the topic and interviewing a former OCE attorney (under Bush ca. 2006-07). As a professional grownup – presumed to be disinterested, he made at least two points that I recall (while still half-asleep at 0530 Alaska Standard Time):

    1) The OCE enjoyed “bi-partisan” support.
    2) The changes amount to letting the “fox guard the chickens”
    3) The “chickens” are the US Citizen’s

(OK – three points – not bad, considering I feel back asleep before awaking to the second hour on Morning Edition)

Anyway, I mention this, thinking the the counselor is without doubt better informed than most – a coup of sorts for NPR. You may find a five minute audio archive worthwhile.

Further commentary on the radio indicated that, despite joining their GOP counterparts in their “annoyances” with the OCE, House Democrats are not as keen on this as The Majority.

My cynical thought is that Democrats, of course after a reliable “head count” on the matter, will take the opportunity to demonstrate their “ethical purity” by voting against the measure even as they help their supposed rivals to gut the office (privately cheer them on).

And another – Trump gets brownie points even as he looks on to a fight that is not his.

    1. I guess you can call me an RFK Liberal. Your pop-psych radar is dialed in. Thanks as always for your comments.
