Gov. Abbott hands out blame, fails to own this crisis

I have some advice for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

You need to stop dishing out blame to others and start taking ownership of the role you have played in the spike in COVID-19 infection, hospitalization and death in the state you were elected to govern.

Abbott decided this week to blame 20-something Texans for refusing to practice social distancing, for failing to wear face masks in public and for being too cavalier about the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic that has swept around the globe.

Here’s a thought for the governor to ponder, although he likely won’t: Greg Abbott has the authority to issue a mandate that requires Texans to wear masks. Yet he doesn’t do that. He chooses to follow the lead of others — namely Donald Trump — who decline to accept fully the gravity of the health crisis at hand.

Having said that I’ll accept that we all deserve to be slapped across the face about this COVID-19. We need to ensure we all take it seriously. I get it. However, I found the tone of Gov. Abbott’s remarks to be disconcerting because they fail to address the role he and other political leaders can play in reducing the threat of this killer virus to Texans.

Isn’t there a saying making the rounds that declares that “We’re all in this together”? If were “in it together,” then we need to share the responsibility in looking for ways to get through this crisis. Assessing blame to just some of us won’t do the job.

  1. When do write an article condemning the Democrat leadership of all these cities having so many problems? They have, of course, been in control for decades. Yet, it’s Trumps fault. LOL!!!

    1. Of course that’s an asinine question, John. Every city has problems, and it just so happens that 2/3 of America’s economy comes from urban population centers led overwhelmingly by Democrats.

If you want to defend Abbott from his own dereliction, you could point out that Abbott didn’t have access to the intelligence & medical expertise Trump ignored early on. But you’d have a problem with that because unlike Gov Cuomo whose state was hit hard & early, Abbott had more time to make plans.

And on that note, Abbott like Cuomo and so many other governors, was hamstrung by the federal government’s incompetence due to Trump. Now Abbott has to walk on eggshells around a cult Trump created.

  2. LOL! I’m not sure I’d even consider comparing Abbott to Cuomo. Abbot protected nursing homes. Cuomo had people moved to nursing homes where they had massive deaths from the move.

But, if you feel Cuomo did a great job with his leadership, you are certainly entitled to that opinion. I’ll not try to sway you.

    1. John, be a big boy and reply to me directly if you have a spine. It’s rather cowardly that you want the appearance of a reply, but without alerting me that you have done so.

Re: Cuomo, nursing homes were affected all over, and if Cuomo had had access to the US intelligence that Trump ignored & squandered, many states, including Texas, might have been better prepared.

The number one duty of the POTUS is the safety of Americans. Trump is an utter, unmitigated, failure whom you worship to high hell.

  3. Don’t worry about me being “spineless”, I don’t get notices of replies here either. I used to get an email. It no longer happens. I have to remember to look at each post for comments.
