She&#8217;s unemployed. One of her children suffers from cerebral palsy. Then she took a chance at the Powerball payoff.<\/p>\n<p>She won &#8212; big!<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/articles\/news\/2015\/02\/nc_mother_of_4_who_had_to_quit_working_to_care_for_children_hits_powerball.html?wpisrc=topstories<\/p>\n<p>Holmes is one of three winners of a jackpot totaling $564 million. Just like that, she&#8217;s a multimillionaire.<\/p>\n<p>Stories like this make me <em>almost<\/em>\u00a0happy that states sanction gambling in this manner. I say &#8220;almost&#8221;\u00a0 because I don&#8217;t believe in these get-rich-quick schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t misunderstand. I&#8217;m happy for Marie Holmes and her children. She had to quit her job to take care of them, as she couldn&#8217;t afford the child care required.<\/p>\n<p>Well, she can afford it now &#8212; and then some.<\/p>\n<p>These kinds of stories tempt me to play the game. So far, I&#8217;m glad to say, they haven&#8217;t tempted me beyond my strength.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, I&#8217;m still a dollar ahead in the Texas lottery. I bought my first lottery ticket for a dollar in 1991 and got $3 back. So, ahead by $2 at the time, I bought another ticket the following week; I didn&#8217;t win a thing.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when I quit.\u00a0Being a\u00a0dollar ahead is good enough for me.<\/p>\n<p>As for Marie Holmes, may she avoid the pitfalls that trap so many big winners.
