{"id":55885,"date":"2023-09-17T13:30:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-17T13:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=55885"},"modified":"2023-09-17T13:30:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-17T13:30:07","slug":"gop-gap-widens-with-acquittal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=55885","title":{"rendered":"GOP gap widens with acquittal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Dan Patrick wasted no time in displaying his partisan stripes after the Texas Senate acquitted Attorney General Ken Paxton of the charges leveled against him by the House of Reps that impeached him.<\/p>\n<p>The lieutenant governor blasted the House for &#8220;wasting&#8221; taxpayers&#8217; money on an impeachment that didn&#8217;t produce a conviction on any of the 16 charges examined by senators.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan fired back, calling Patrick&#8217;s remarks unseemly while defending the House for acting on a legitimate complaint brought by the House panel charged with investigating wrongdoing in state government. Phelan said this in a statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"t-copy t-links-underlined t-align-left\"><em>\u201cI find it deeply concerning that after weeks of claiming he would preside over this trial in an impartial and honest manner, Lt. Governor Patrick would conclude by confessing his bias and placing his contempt for the people\u2019s house on full display,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cThe inescapable conclusion is that today\u2019s outcome appears to have been orchestrated from the start, cheating the people of Texas of justice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/09\/16\/ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-republican-civil-war\/\">Ken Paxton\u2019s impeachment trial escalates Republican civil war | The Texas Tribune<\/a><\/p>\n<p>OK, I&#8217;ll go with Phelan&#8217;s view of this intraparty civil war that now appears ready to burst into full-throated venom.<\/p>\n<p>From my seat in North Texas, the House acted within its purview. The Senate acted, too, within its own set of rules. I disagree with the Senate&#8217;s findings and its conclusion, which of course shouldn&#8217;t surprise anyone.<\/p>\n<p>As for the process being a waste of time and money, it was nothing of the sort.
