{"id":538,"date":"2013-03-01T13:31:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/01\/dont-mess-with-these-students"},"modified":"2013-03-01T13:31:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-01T13:31:00","slug":"dont-mess-with-these-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=538","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t mess with these students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>West Texas A&amp;M University students seem to favor a rule that would allow them to pack heat on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s student government association has been conducting an online \u201cpoll\u201d to gauge students\u2019 attitudes about concealed handgun carry and have learned that to date about 67 of respondents favor the idea.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.connectamarillo.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=866687\" href=\"http:\/\/www.connectamarillo.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=866687\">http:\/\/www.connectamarillo.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=866687<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But before the WT student group plows ahead, it\u2019s good to remember something: They don\u2019t run the place; administrators and faculty members do \u2026 and they all answer to a governing Texas A&amp;M University System board of regents, which likely will have to sign off on any such notion.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I believe allowing students to carry guns under their jackets or in their purses is a nutty notion. But that\u2019s just me.<\/p>\n<p>At another level, though, I\u2019m impressed that the WT Student Government Association is taking a keen interest in an issue that exploded on the national scene last December when a madman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 first-graders and six teachers before killing himself.<\/p>\n<p>The WT student senate is expected to make a recommendation soon to the administration, the A&amp;M regents and to the area\u2019s legislative delegation on its findings. My hunch is that all the parties \u2013 with the possible exception of WT administrators \u2013 would be receptive to allowing students to carry guns on campus.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping they all give this idea some careful thought and deliberation before moving forward on what well might be a knee-jerk reaction to a grievous national tragedy.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>West Texas A&amp;M University students seem to favor a rule that would allow them to pack heat on campus.
