{"id":50614,"date":"2022-02-19T23:01:12","date_gmt":"2022-02-19T23:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=50614"},"modified":"2022-02-19T23:01:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-19T23:01:12","slug":"sentence-causes-heartburn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=50614","title":{"rendered":"Sentence causes heartburn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">My first reaction to learning of the sentence given to a former Minneapolis police officer who shot a young man to death thinking she was firing a Taser at him, and not her pistol, was that she got off too lightly.<\/p>\n<p>Former cop Kim Potter will serve two years in the slammer and on supervised probation in the shooting death of Daunte Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Potter is a white woman; Wright was African American.<\/p>\n<p>She got into a tussle with Wright during a stop. Wright started resisting arrest. Potter reached for her service pistol and shot Wright. She carried her Taser on the other side of her belt. The Taser is bright yellow; the pistol is black. They feel differently in the hand and they certainly look differently.<\/p>\n<p>I was horrified when I first heard of the incident. How could a trained police officer make such a grievous error? How does one reach for one device thinking she was reaching for another one?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-high-plains-blogger wp-block-embed-high-plains-blogger\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" title=\"\u201cEx-cop guilty!\u201d \u2014 High Plains Blogger\" src=\"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/2021\/12\/23\/ex-cop-guilty\/embed\/#?secret=mvsso7FIs5#?secret=Pcn5GhNLoa\" width=\"585\" height=\"258\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" data-secret=\"Pcn5GhNLoa\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Potter deserved to spend the maximum amount of time after a jury convicted her of involuntary manslaughter. Then the thought occurred to me \u2026 finally! She didn\u2019t intend to shoot Daunte Wright with her service weapon.<\/p>\n<p>I am still wrestling with the correctness of the sentence. I guess I just am not as dumbstruck by the act as I was initially.<\/p>\n<p>Potter is done with police work. Of that I am absolutely certain.
