{"id":48346,"date":"2021-06-17T18:15:44","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T18:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=48346"},"modified":"2021-06-17T18:15:44","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T18:15:44","slug":"juneteenth-receives-deserved-honor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=48346","title":{"rendered":"Juneteenth receives deserved honor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>By John Kanelis<\/strong> \/ <a href=\"mailto:johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com\">johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Texas has celebrated this glorious day for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s time for the rest of the nation to join us.<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth will become the nation&#8217;s latest national holiday once President Biden puts his name on the legislation that sailed through the Senate unanimously and through the House in overwhelmingly bipartisan fashion.<\/p>\n<p>It becomes the first national holiday since Martin Luther King Jr.&#8217;s birthday was declared such in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>I am delighted as a Texas resident to see this state take a front-and-center place in this discussion. June 19, 1865 was the day that African-Americans were informed in Galveston that they were, indeed, free from enslavement; the announcement came two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
