{"id":47434,"date":"2021-04-07T02:50:57","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T02:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=47434"},"modified":"2021-04-07T16:47:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T16:47:58","slug":"soddies-can-proclaim-were-no-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=47434","title":{"rendered":"Soddies can proclaim: We&#8217;re No. 6!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>By JOHN KANELIS<\/strong> \/ <a href=\"mailto:johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com\">johnkanelis_92@hotmail.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Texas Monthly has weighed in with its strangest and coolest minor-league baseball team names for 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Drum roll for Amarillo Sod Poodles fans: Your team made the cut as the sixth-strangest\/coolest name in Texas minor league baseball.<\/p>\n<p>As TM writes: <em>As a new team, the Sod Poodles had the advantage of history in knowing how fans had taken to other quirky team names in choosing their identity, but we can\u2019t argue with the results: prairie dogs are certainly plentiful out near Amarillo, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/arts-entertainment\/root-root-root-for-the-amarillo-sod-poodles\/\">old settler term \u201csod poodles\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is definitely a fun way to refer to them. The name had to grow on me. I wasn&#8217;t crazy about the name when I first heard it had made the list of finalists under consideration. I didn&#8217;t know what a Sod Poodle is, but I found out it&#8217;s an old cowboy name for prairie dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever its historical significance, the Sod Poodles have played some good hardball in their single year in existence.<\/p>\n<p>They are set to open their new season in early May.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the Sod Poodles won the Texas League pennant in their first year in Amarillo. They are starting a new season this week.
