Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma is getting grouchier with age.<\/p>\n<p>He has described Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel\u2019s decision to donate part of his salary back to the Treasury in response to the mandated \u201csequestration\u201d budget cuts as \u201cchildish,\u201d and a publicity stunt.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/292667-inhofe-donating-pay-over-sequester-childish\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/292667-inhofe-donating-pay-over-sequester-childish\">http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/292667-inhofe-donating-pay-over-sequester-childish<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I beg to differ with the distinguished gentlemen from the Sooner State.<\/p>\n<p>The decision isn\u2019t childish. It demonstrates a desire to lead by example, which, where I come from, is the most effective type of leadership of all.<\/p>\n<p>Hagel has been joined by President Obama and a handful of other executive branch officials in giving back 5 percent of their salaries. It\u2019s interesting to me that House members and senators aren\u2019t too eager to join the ranks of those willing to give back some of their salary. Those folks \u2013 along with the president \u2013 are responsible for the sequestration in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Inhofe says he has no plans to follow Hagel\u2019s and Obama\u2019s lead. He must need the money.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Inhofe ought to set aside his crabby attitude, though, and recognize that folks have differing views on how to handle the ongoing federal budget struggle. No one believes these gestures are anything more than symbolic.
