{"id":31634,"date":"2018-08-08T18:35:38","date_gmt":"2018-08-08T18:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=31634"},"modified":"2018-08-14T14:22:20","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T14:22:20","slug":"worst-or-best-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=31634","title":{"rendered":"Worst or best names?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/baseball.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31635\" src=\"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/baseball-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/baseball-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/baseball-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/baseball.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A letter to the editor in today&#8217;s Amarillo Globe-News comes from a man who, I think, understands why the weird names on the finalist list being considered for Amarillo&#8217;s new baseball team may produce one of the potentially &#8220;best&#8221; team nicknames of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the letter; it&#8217;s brief:<\/p>\n<p><em>Regarding the recent letter to the editor in Amarillo Globe-News (Letter: \u2018Sod Poodles\u2019 has competition for worst name in minor league baseball, Aug. 3, amarillo.com) about \u201cRocky Mountain Oysters\u201d being the worst name in professional baseball, it is just a matter of opinion, but I think \u201cRocky Mountain Oysters\u201d is one of the best minor league baseball team names.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And \u201cToledo Mud Hens\u201d runs a close second.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The letter is signed by Dick Novotny of Amarillo.<\/p>\n<p>I think the man gets it.<\/p>\n<p>I admit to being initially turned off by the list of finalists when the Elmore Group &#8212; owners of the AA team that will play ball in Amarillo beginning next spring. Then I started thinking about it. I also heard the team&#8217;s justification for going with the goofy names.<\/p>\n<p>It made sense. The team owners want the team name to become some sort of brand for the outfit that will play ball. They point out that many other minor-league franchises have fielded teams with strange-sounding names. The two of them noted in the AGN Media letter are good examples.<\/p>\n<p>I have heard already of the Mud Hens. I understand that the Mud Hens are popular in Toledo, Ohio, irrespective of the name of the team.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still going to go with Sod Poodles as the new team&#8217;s name. Who knows?
