{"id":3068,"date":"2013-07-28T23:18:17","date_gmt":"2013-07-28T23:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/?p=3068"},"modified":"2013-07-28T23:18:17","modified_gmt":"2013-07-28T23:18:17","slug":"tea-party-vs-establishment-gop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=3068","title":{"rendered":"Tea Party vs. Establishment GOP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s going to be fun watching the tea party wing of the Republican Party take on the old dogs of the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll be over Obamacare and whether it\u2019s prudent to shut down the government to deprive the Affordable Care Act of the funds it will need to become operational.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/healthwatch\/health-reform-implementation\/313819-obamacare-funding-battle-pits-tea-party-vs-establishment-gop\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/healthwatch\/health-reform-implementation\/313819-obamacare-funding-battle-pits-tea-party-vs-establishment-gop\">http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/healthwatch\/health-reform-implementation\/313819-obamacare-funding-battle-pits-tea-party-vs-establishment-gop<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I see happening.<\/p>\n<p>The establishment wing of the party knows the dangers of shutting the government down to prove some kind of political point. The Republicans tried that in the late 1990s. You remember that, yes? House Speaker Newt Gingrich and his band of GOP insurgents shut \u2018er down over a budget fight with the Clinton administration; turned out Newtie really was mad because President Clinton didn\u2019t give him a choice seat aboard Air Force One \u2013 but I digress.<\/p>\n<p>The government shutdown didn\u2019t work well for Gingrich and his Republican foot soldiers. They ended up getting their heads handed to them in the 1998 mid-term elections, Gingrich ended up quitting the House and President Clinton \u2013 despite being impeached by the House \u2013 ended his presidency on a high note.<\/p>\n<p>The establishment guys remember all that. Their memories are painful. The tea party guys are new to this game of D.C. hardball politics. They\u2019re righteous in their cause and, by golly, they\u2019re going to have it their way or else. <\/p>\n<p>I feel compelled to remind them that Newt Gingrich once was a righteous revolutionary who knew how to <em>obtain<\/em> power, but didn\u2019t have a clue about what to do when it came time to actually <em>use<\/em> it.<\/p>\n<p>A part of me is beginning to believe that history is going to repeat itself.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s going to be fun watching the tea party wing of the Republican Party take on the old dogs of the GOP.
