{"id":2869,"date":"2013-07-22T14:23:59","date_gmt":"2013-07-22T14:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/?p=2869"},"modified":"2013-07-22T14:23:59","modified_gmt":"2013-07-22T14:23:59","slug":"bad-idea-to-boycott-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=2869","title":{"rendered":"Bad idea to boycott Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>A California assemblyman has proposed a patently bad idea in response to a controversial trial verdict.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Chris Holden wants Californians to \u201cboycott Florida\u201d because a Sanford jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the case involving the February 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/editorials\/la-ed-florida-boycott-california-legislature-trayv-20130721,0,1560540.story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/editorials\/la-ed-florida-boycott-california-legislature-trayv-20130721,0,1560540.story\">http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/editorials\/la-ed-florida-boycott-california-legislature-trayv-20130721,0,1560540.story<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can there be a more bizarre reaction to something so fundamental as a jury doing its job?<\/p>\n<p>Holden says Florida\u2019s \u201cStand Your Ground\u201d law deserves to be targeted by a boycott. That\u2019s an interesting point, given \u2013 as the Los Angeles Times editorial board has noted \u2013 Zimmerman didn\u2019t invoke the law in his defense.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m one of those who believes the jury might have gotten it wrong in acquitting Zimmerman. But to launch a boycott pitting states against each other in what the LA Times calls \u201can economic war between the states\u201d is an overreaction in the extreme.<\/p>\n<p>I also am one of those who tends to respect a jury\u2019s decision \u2013 no matter if I think it\u2019s the wrong one \u2013 and seeks reasonable remedies. Punishing business owners by invoking a blanket boycott \u2013 regardless of a business owner\u2019s personal views on the \u201cStand Your Ground\u201d law \u2013 is profoundly unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s keep debating the issues surrounding the Zimmerman trial, but let\u2019s do so without hysterics.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California assemblyman has proposed a patently bad idea in response to a controversial trial verdict.
