So … this is how Donald J. Trump plans to sound “presidential.”<\/p>\n

The president flew today to Atlanta to speak to the National Rifle Association’s national convention.<\/p>\n

He stood behind the podium and told the conventioneers about how he intends to fight for their rights as gun owners.<\/p>\n

He said, this, too: “It could be Pocahontas. Remember that. And\u00a0she is not big on the NRA, that I can tell you.”<\/p>\n

Who is “Pocahontas” and in what context was he making that reference?<\/p>\n

It happens to be a duly elected U.S. senator from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat who has said over the years that she has a bit of Native American heritage. Trump has challenged Warren’s assertion and has chosen to ridicule her Native American\u00a0claim by referring to her as Pocahontas.<\/p>\n

She also might run for president in 2020. Thus, he is warning the NRA that she favors stricter controls on guns, which the NRA of course opposes.<\/p>\n

Presidents usually don’t stoop to the kind of goofy name-calling we keep hearing from the guy who occupies that post.<\/p>\n

Still, he keeps telling us of his intention to be more “presidential.”<\/p>\n

I’m still waiting, Mr. President.<\/p>\n\n
