{"id":166,"date":"2013-05-25T18:44:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-25T18:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/25\/no-ordinary-bridge-collapse"},"modified":"2013-05-25T18:44:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-25T18:44:00","slug":"no-ordinary-bridge-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=166","title":{"rendered":"No ordinary bridge collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>The bridge that collapsed north of Seattle this week signals the start of yet another spirited debate in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>What are we going do to repair our crumbling infrastructure?<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/25\/us\/washington-state-bridge-collapse-highlights-infrastructure-needs.html?ref=us&amp;_r=0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/25\/us\/washington-state-bridge-collapse-highlights-infrastructure-needs.html?ref=us&amp;_r=0\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/25\/us\/washington-state-bridge-collapse-highlights-infrastructure-needs.html?ref=us&amp;_r=0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Part of the Interstate 5 bridge fell into the Skagit River. No one died in the incident, even though several vehicles plunged into the drink. We can give thanks that no one was lost.<\/p>\n<p>However, the government is in serious budget-cutting mode. The mandatory sequestration of funds \u2013 some of which might go toward highway and bridge maintenance \u2013 could potentially hinder this important work.<\/p>\n<p>Is the Seattle-area bridge collapse a harbinger of similar occurrences in the future? Many civil engineering experts think it is. Since I\u2019m not a civil engineer, I\u2019ll take their word for it. Indeed, I\u2019m not hearing any others say that the nation\u2019s roads and bridges are in just wonderful condition \u2026 thank you very much.<\/p>\n<p>We remain a highly mobile society.
