He got a light sentence: probation. For what? Oh, for killing four people in a motor vehicle accident in Fort Worth while driving a pickup truck. He was roaring drunk, at least three times\u00a0over the minimum legal limit.<\/p>\n<p>But then came the astonishing defense that the judge apparently swallowed. Couch&#8217;s lawyer said\u00a0the young man\u00a0suffered from &#8220;affluenza,&#8221; having been raised in a wealthy family, by parents who failed to teach him right from wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Then the kid went on probation, only to violate the terms of his sentence. He was caught drinking. He fled the country, ending up in Mexico &#8212; with the assistance of his mother.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good that he was caught. Couch, who was 16 at the time of his crime, has just turned 19. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/14\/us\/teenager-who-used-affluenza-defense-is-sentenced-to-jail.html?module=WatchingPortal&amp;region=c-column-middle-span-region&amp;pgType=Homepage&amp;action=click&amp;mediaId=thumb_square&amp;state=standard&amp;contentPlacement=3&amp;version=internal&amp;contentCollection=www.nytimes.com&amp;contentId=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2016%2F04%2F14%2Fus%2Fteenager-who-used-affluenza-defense-is-sentenced-to-jail.html&amp;eventName=Watching-article-click&amp;_r=0\">Texas law<\/a> doesn&#8217;t allow much of a jail sentence because the young man was a juvenile when he committed the original crime.<\/p>\n<p>But at least he&#8217;s going to serve nearly two years in the slammer.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad to see that the young man will get what was due at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Now, how about throwing the book at his mother &#8212; Tonya Couch &#8212; for aiding and abetting his escape from justice?<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethan Couch is headed to jail.
