{"id":1180,"date":"2010-05-03T15:05:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/highplainsblogger.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/03\/drive-now-text-later"},"modified":"2010-05-03T15:05:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:05:00","slug":"drive-now-text-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/?p=1180","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Drive now, text later &#8230;&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/highplainsblogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/800px-cell_phone_use_while_driving.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467066992329372754\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/highplainsblogger.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/ae257-800px-cell_phone_use_while_driving.jpg?w=300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Texas transportation officials have a new fan: me.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>They&#8217;ve posted a no-cell-phone-while-driving message on those Amber Alert signs over Amarillo&#8217;s two interstate highways.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Texas Department of Transportation has now joined forces with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, who has taken the cell phone\/texting\/driving issue seriously enough to launch a national campaign against this frightening practice.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>TxDOT&#8217;s message urges drivers to &#8220;drive now and text later,&#8221; and urges the motoring public to turn their vehicles into a &#8220;no phone zone.&#8221; <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My wish is that TxDOT would keep the messages flashing only unless the police have a missing person to locate. Then TxDOT could replace the cell phone message in favor of the more urgent message. Then once the missing-person case is resolved, TxDOT can put the cell phone message back up.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My friends and family members are well aware of my intense dislike of those who yap on cell phones while driving their 4,000-pound motor vehicle. And don&#8217;t <em>even<\/em> get me started on those who &#8220;text&#8221; while driving.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The state has banned the practice in school zones; it has made it illegal for school bus drivers to talk on cell phones while they&#8217;re transporting children. Some cities in Texas have enacted ordinances to ban talking or texting while driving. Amarillo has yet to join that chorus. <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My sense is that it is time, given the increasing percentage of drivers who operate cell phones while maneuvering their Hummers through busy traffic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Meantime, you go, TxDOT!<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=jkanelis\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas transportation officials have a new fan: me.
